Some shows are outstanding examples of Groucho’s wide range. This three-disc set collects complete copies of some shows on which they guested or starred, as well as excerpts, including commercials (such as the silent-tongued Harpo selling beer, evaporated milk and cola). It would lengthen their careers by more than a decade.
When they announced their retirement from the screen with the release of 1949’s “Love Happy,” it was the closing of one door but the opening of another, into the challenging new world of television. The Marx Brothers left behind a wealth of movies, including classics like 1930's Animal Crackers, 1933's Duck Soup, and 1935's A Night at the Opera.
Yet, here we are still talking about them, which must mean they were doing something right with their brand of distinctive and anarchic comedy. It's been almost 35 years since the last Marx brother passed away and almost a full century since their first movie (1921's The Cocoanuts) appeared on the silver screen.
